Service Description

The process starts with a range of background information collected about the individual to find out the extent of their difficulties as well as their learning strengths. Pre-assessment questionnaires will be distributed and information will be gathered to see if there is a history of specific learning difficulties in the family and if there have been any prior referrals to external services. Following this a range of assessments will be carried out, testing different areas which they may find difficult. It also helps to outline their abilities and learning strengths. The assessments usually take between 3-4 hours, depending on the individual. Breaks and refreshments can be offered in between subtests. All the information gathered will then be analysed and a detailed, diagnostic report will then be compiled. This will be followed by a recommendations section, which will outline strategies and resources that can be used at home and in an education/work place setting. The reports meet the SpLD Assessment Standards Committee (SASC) and PATOSS guidelines, so they are fully up to date. Once completed, the full report will be issued within two weeks, but oral feedback will be given immediately. The reports are written by an assessor with an Assessment Practising Certificate (APC) and so can be used when making future application for DSA (Disability Student Allowance).
